Durban, South Africa (23 August 2024) – A new aeroponic garden has been established in Isipingo in Durban, to provide patients with sustainable nutrition, promoting medication adherence and overall well-being.
Patients and the community around the Isipingo Clinic are set to benefit from a newly launched Aeroponic garden aimed at ensuring that patients on medication have access to sustainable nutrition to promote adherence to their treatment plans.
It’s easy to overlook the importance of a hearty, nutritious meal when it’s something we have in abundance. Unfortunately, for many struggling families in Isiphingo, access to such meals is a luxury. Projects like these are crucial in providing the essential nourishment that patients desperately need.
By providing access to nutritious food and supporting social connections, these initiatives help to reduce poverty, prevent disease, and create a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
Aeroponics is a method of growing plants without the use of soil. Instead of being planted in the ground or soil, the plants are suspended in the air and their roots are regularly misted with a nutrient-rich solution.
This innovative project, supported by various organisations, is a significant step towards improving social health and food security in the community.
According to the eThekwini Municipality, the state-of-the-art garden is a significant positive step towards social health and food security made possible through partnerships with the Aids Healthcare Foundation, the Department of Agriculture and the City’s Agro Ecology Unit.
