Makers Row, a food and beverage hub in West Allis, has secured a partnership with a Green Bay-based agriculture technology that will bring one of the largest hydroponic farms to the area.
Fork Farms plans to open a farm within the Makers Row development, at the corner of West National Avenue and 66th Street, Fork Farms said in an Aug. 25 news release. The farm will be able to grow up to 34,000 pounds of fresh produce annually.
This site will also serve as Fork Farms’ new Milwaukee-area headquarters and would feature a hydroponic showroom.
The farm will occupy more than 5,000 square feet and will use Fork Farms’ vertical growing systems, stacked indoor setups that grow plants with water and nutrients. According to Fork Farms, this technology reduces water use by 98% compared with traditional farming and allows crops such as lettuce and greens to grow faster in controlled environments.
The timeline for the project wasn’t disclosed.
Makers Row recently launched a new entity called Makers Row Farms LLC to operate the hydroponic farm.
“We are elated to partner with Makers Row Farms and support them with growing thousands of pounds of fresh produce for the local community,” Michael Hostad, chief revenue officer for Fork Farms said in the release. “By growing food locally where it’s consumed, we create a more sustainable, resilient food system for future generations.”
Robert Monnat, developer of Makers Row, said the city has supported the project and its focus on welcoming Wisconsin-based businesses.
“In addition to corporate clients looking to support highly nutritious in-house dining for employees, we see opportunities to support direct-to-consumer sales through the adjoining West Allis Farmers Market,” Monnat said in the release.
West Allis Mayor Dan Devine told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he’s very excited for this project to move forward.
“The Fork Farms concept of providing year-round access to fresh, locally grown produce ties in nicely with the West Allis Farmers Market,” Devine said. “Together, these offerings create a unique, year-round hub for fresh food in West Allis.”
Devine also said it was nice to see some activity on one of the remaining pieces of the Six Points Neighborhood.
“We are grateful that Fork Farms chose West Allis to be the home of their corporate headquarters,” he said.
As of 2025, Fork Farms partners with organizations in all 50 states and internationally, with more than 4,000 units installed worldwide.
The company has been recognized as one of Inc. Magazine’s 5,000 Fastest Growing Companies in America and was named the fastest-growing agriculture and natural resources company on the list.
